Analysis of sub-genre conventions - Macro

Youth Drama
Donnie Darko

the key plot idea introduced in the title sequence was the main event that changed the main characters life, the accident. When Donnie was riding his bike home, it took us around his neighbour hood, like 'a trip to memory lane'. When he got into his home, he opened the fridge and it said 'where's Donnie?' This also makes us skeptical of what it means, encouraging us to watch along. The story line is introduced in a particular order. It first shows the after math of the main characters accident. He then gets up, unphased, and rides his bike home. Right after he gets off his bike the family is shown, or introduced individually doing their things, which gives us an idea of what they are like. The characters introduced was in order of importance in the movie. First was the main character. Then his dad, sister and mother were all shown right after each other. The social groups represented in this title sequence was age because the adults in the scenes were doing 'adult things' like reading (for a hobby) and outdoor chores. And the younger ones like the little sister was bouncing on the trampoline and the main character was riding his bike.

Kidulthood

The key plot idea introduced is young rebellious teenagers getting into trouble.  this is shown by images of teens smoking, being in gangs, saying slang words, guns, people running and the police lights.

The story line is not really shown in this title sequence, it only shows what we are about to see later on. No specific characters are introduced here, but all the things we see the teens doing may resemble certain characters in the story. The social groups represented here are age and gender. Age is because it only shows adolescent teenagers doing rebellious activities. Gender because the rebellious activities are portrayed by boys and the only girl on there was kissing another boy.

High school drama
Grease

The key plot idea introduced in the title sequence is young romance and high school life. This is shown in the beginning where the main character Danny has to get out of bed to get ready for the beginning of high school. The storyline begins when a fantasy summer romance between the two main characters come to an end because high school has begun. During, the sequence is very colourful and sketchy. It is very stylized and cartoon-like and in a very up beat motion to portray the characters feelings of the beginning of high school. The characters introduced are the main ones, which includes; Danny, Sandy, Rizzo, the T-birds and the pink ladies. The social groups represented here are age and gender. This is because these are meant to be high school adolescents and the boys are portrayed as strong hard workers, and the girls are very conceited.

The social network

The key plot ideas introduced in the beginning is college relationship, and it wasn't going well because he is very 'nerdy'. It then also gives us an insight in the college lifestyle the main character wasn't involved in, like partying and getting really drunk. The storyline shows his girlfriend breaking up with him and he goes home to blog about it because he was upset about it. He then begins to hack others accounts in order to create a new website. The characters introduced was the main character (Mark) his girlfriend whom he recently split with and a couple of his room mates. The social groups represented are gender and age. This is because the guys were seen as more nerdy and some stayed in their dorms. But the girls  seemed more rebellious and sexually active.
